groot nieuws! paniek bij de Amerikanos mma-sites

Pre-fight conference calls are generally quite routine affairs. They serve a purpose: getting quotes to reporters to pass on to the fans, but often it's a lot of words with little meaning. The fighter always has had "the best camp of my life," is in the "the best shape of his life," and has plans to win.

A few colorful characters sometimes stray from the script, but every once in a while you get something unexpected. Heavyweight MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko dropped one of those moments during Friday's Strikeforce call leading up to his fight with Fabricio Werdum on June 26. Asked by MMA Fighting why their fight was more relevant than the upcoming UFC heavyweight championship bout a week later, the usually soft-spoken Emelianenko explained that the two fights featured four world-class talents. Then, he let out a rare, pointed comment.

"I'm not a UFC fan," he said through his interpreter, Steve Bash.

After inviting fans to watch his fight, which takes place at the San Jose, Calif. HP Pavilion and airs on Showtime, Emelianenko later expounded upon his remarks.

Share54 "What I meant to say was, I'm not a fan of watching their fights," he said. "Compared to the commercials, the promotion and anticipation of their fights and the shows I've seen, there seems to be a negativity in a lot of their shows, so I'm just not a fan of watching their programs.

"In some ways how the fights are presented, and the manner that they're presented." he continued. "Also, in some ways, the actions and behavior of some of the fighters in the UFC. It takes away from the sport."

Emelianenko did not name any specific fighters or actions, instead choosing to speak in general terms. For what it's worth, both he and Werdum are considered two of the sport's classiest individuals.

Emelianenko, whose M-1 Global management team has flirted with the UFC in past negotiation talks, has two fights left on his current Strikeforce deal. He is 32-1 with one no contest in his career, a record that easily ranks among the best winning percentages in MMA history.

UFC President Dana White has repeatedly voiced an interest in signing the Russian powerhouse, but has continually voiced a frustration in dealing with M-1. Still, despite Emelianenko's pointed comments, White would likely take another crack at signing him if Strikeforce and Emelianenko do not reach a contract extension and he makes it back on the free-agent market.

Maaruh Fedor vind het dus niet leuk om te kijken naar vechters die uit de nooduitgang komen en elkaar vervolgens 15 of 25 minuten lang droogneuken?

Waarom niet?

Fedor Not a Fan of UFC’s 'Negativity'

(Fedor doesn’t ask for relentless positivity, he demands it.)

After showing up fashionably late for yesterday’s Strikeforce media conference call with upcoming foe Fabricio Werdum, Fedor Emelianenko did his usual song and dance about respect for his opponent, trust in God and love of country. You may have read about all of that in the recap provided through the Friday link dump. But aside from expounding on his own core beliefs, the world’s consensus No. 1-ranked heavyweight also slipped in a dig at the competition during an exchange not featured in the Dump's version of events.

According to a report from MMAFighting.com’s Mike Chiappetta, Fedor commented that he doesn’t totally approve of how our friends in Las Vegas are running their organization:

"I'm not a UFC fan," Fedor said through an interpreter.

The statement came in response to a question from MMAFighting about why (or if) Emelianenko and Werdum thought their upcoming bout was “more relevant” than the UFC’s scheduled heavyweight title match between Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin. (Ed. Note: This moment may also serve as a good example for media types: If you ask an interesting question, sometimes you get an interesting answer.)

Fedor responded to the query by saying, while he respects both Lesnar and Carwin, he doesn’t care for the UFC’s total promotional package. Later in the call, he explained a bit more. From the article:

"What I meant to say was, I'm not a fan of watching their fights," he said.

I’m not sure this qualifies as some insight into why Emelianenko could never come to a deal with the UFC, but it is interesting to note that Fedor’s comments come the same week that UFC President Dana White lobbed yet another long-winded attack at the former Pride champ during an interview with MMAJunkie.com:

"(Strikeforce has) sold 4,000 tickets to the (June 26) Fedor fight," White said. "That fight is in a couple of weeks. Nobody gives a [expletive], and nobody is going to give a [expletive] about Fedor until he gets in here and fights the best fighters in the world. And believe me when I tell you I tried to make it happen. You don't even know the crazy [expletive] places that I've flown and the [expletive] that I've done to try and get this fight done. It got to the point where it became an obsession. I wasn't sleeping.

"I've signed Brock Lesnar, who came from the WWE, James Toney from boxing – he's a nut chasing me all over the place – Tito Ortiz, whom I hated, and he hated me. I signed him twice when we hated each other. I've kept Chuck Liddell, kept Matt Hughes, kept Rich Franklin, when they were all champions. Anderson Silva, I've dealt with all the crazy [expletive] with him.

"But I can't sign Fedor? How is this possible that I can't sign this guy? It's not possible. These guys don't want to fight the best in the world."

More on some other interesting (read: kind of crazy) things White had to say in that interview later today. For now, is it too much of a stretch to wonder if a small part of what kept Fedor out of the Octagon was that there’s just a little too much pissing in fruit trays, punching after the bell and flipping off the crowd going on in Zuffa’s programming?
