"I think that's what an athletic commission is for," White said. "The athletic commissions have been around for a long time. When fighters start talking about other guys being drug tested? Shut up. Worry about you."
"It's been a long time since somebody tested positive for steroids. When we first took over, guys were popping here and there and I said, 'You have to be a moron to do steroids in this sport.' It's just dumb."
Dana White talks Josh Koscheck's push for Olympic style drug testing via Las Vegas Sun (http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2010/jun/10/dana-white-chuck-liddells-return-blood-testing-and/) This quote is pretty obnoxious to be honest. I appreciate all that Dana has done for the growth of the sport, don't get me wrong. But the idea that because people aren't getting popped under the current system means no one is using is absurd. Most of the designer steroids used by athletes do not show up on basic urine tests.
Obviously White has other reasons that he wants Koscheck to shut up. He doesn't want the sport associated with steroids, he doesn't want it to seem like the current testing is pointless. And he absolutely does not want the UFC to have to take on the extra costs of blood testing. It's understandable really.
But, the big thing remains that we all need to stop pretending that the current testing works. It doesn't work to prevent anything but the guys who can't afford designer steroids from using. And Dana isn't telling Josh to stop talking about better testing for the good of the sport, it's for the good of the UFC's image and pocketbook.
