Proving that Strikeforce and the Diaz brothers don't have the market cornered on post-fight brawling, Hong Kong's Planet Battle promotion featured a ringside clearing brawl this past weekend.
The scheduled fight was between Planet Battle standout Alain Ngalaini and Ramazan Ramazanov (who K-1 fans may remember for his losing effort against Melvin Manhoef at last year's Tokyo GP). What started as a good fight turned somewhat sour when Ramazanov caught Ngalaini with a low blow in the opening round. Not long after, Ngalaini threw a headbutt while in the clinch and Ramazanov threw an elbow in return, leading to both men going after each other while both corners emptied into the ring and the referee tried to pull them apart. From the clip, it certainly appears that Ngalaini's headbutt is intentional and, obviously, illegal. Ramazanov's retaliation is of course not great, but it looks to be Ngalaini who first breaks the rules (disregarding the groin strike, which was, presumably, unintentional).
As I see it, the other major culprit here is the referee, who loses control, asking the fighters to stop, but making very minimal effort to actually stop them (and at one point, seeming to allow them to continue). There's a point where it has gone completely out of control and he would not be able to stop it, but before the corners come in it seems the referee could have restored order, but did not know how to handle the situation. This is not to say that the fighters are not to be held responsible, but the referee shares in the blame from my vantage point. This serves as a further reminder of how important confident, professional officials are to combat sports, both for the sake of the sport and the safety of the fighters.
It's rare that we see this kind of out of control behavior in kickboxing, but as in most any sport, when two opponents get emotional, it can happen. This is a small event, and I would be very surprised were it to have any ripples at all in the broader kickboxing community. But with scrutiny up thanks to Badr Hari, I also don't expect to see Ngalaini or Ramazanov called up to a bigger stage in the near future, which is a shame as they are both solid prospects.
