Former UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver knows why people think he should retire.

"I'm 34 years old and lost five fights in a row," Pulver said on HDNet's Inside MMA.

But Pulver, who's still probably the second-most popular fighter in World Extreme Cagefighting even though he has only one victory in the promotion (his WEC debut in 2007), says he's not yet ready to say he's finished in MMA.

"I'll never retire," Pulver said. "I just want to ride off into the sunset and be left alone. I'm never going to make one of those big speeches. ... I'm not going to retire and say I'm done because you're never done ... I'm never going to be done with this sport so for me there's no reason to say I'm retired."

Pulver knows that some people say he should retire for his own safety, but he says he hasn't been knocked unconscious and therefore doesn't believe it would be dangerous for him to step back into the cage.

"I guess No. 1, I look at it as how have I lost them? No doctors waking me up, no smelling salt, it ain't five minutes later and I'm on a gurney. I'm getting caught in submissions. I'm in wars with guys like Urijah Faber," Pulver said. "I would like to continue. Physically, I feel great."

Still, Pulver sounded like a man who knows the end of his career is near, even if he's not ready to say it's here.

"You never really think about the end, when it's going to be and how it's going to happen," Pulver said. "It's been an incredible run and it's been a fun ride."

Jens Pulver expected to face Diego Garijo at "War on the Mainland"

Former UFC lightweight champion and WEC veteran Jens Pulver (22-13-1) returns Aug. 14 when he faces one-time Bellator Fighting Championships veteran Diego Garijo (4-1) at "War on the Mainland" in Irvine, Calif.

The event's co-promoter, Powerhouse World Promotions CEO Brian D. Manna, today confirmed the bout with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). Manna also shared details of several other bouts slated for the pay-per-view event, which takes place at the Bren Events Center on the University of California, Irvine campus.

Pulver, 35, was released from the WEC earlier this month after his fifth consecutive loss in the promotion, a first-round submission to fellow veteran Javier Vasquez at WEC 47. Though he was widely expected to retire, he recently told fans that he'll soldier on.

Although Pulver had previously worked the broadcast booth as a color analyst for several WEC events, UFC president Dana White recently said the former champion would no longer serve as a commentator.

Pulver has fought a laundry list of top lightweights in his 11-year mixed martial arts career. At UFC 35, he defeated B.J. Penn to win the promotion's first-ever lightweight title.

Additionally, former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia is expected to face former UFC contender Paul Buentello on the main card of "War on the Mainland." Sylvia recently finished former "World's Strongest Man" competitor Mariusz Pudzianowski at "Moosin: God of Martial Arts," while Buentello bested Bryan Humes by decision at "Shark Fights 11: Humes vs. Buentello" following his release from the UFC.

The main card for "War on the Mainland" is as follows (bout order not final):

•Jens Pulver vs. Diego Garijo
•Paul Buentello vs. Tim Sylvia
•Falaniko Vitale vs. Thales Leites
•Jason Lambert vs. Allan Goes
•Rick Reeves vs. Gustavo Machado
•Jorge Ortiz vs. Terry Martin
•Joao Silva vs. Erin Beach
